New build barges

We conceived, designed and built the first British (and possibly the first ever) replica Dutch Luxe Motor, the 60' "Bengta," in 1987. This class of motor barge is the most ideal form of continental inland cruising vessel.

The most recent full new barge build project to be completed, "Merwede," (pronounced "Mervayder") was launched recently. At 100' (30 metres) long by 15' 6" (4.75 metres) beam we believe this to be the biggest boat ever built in the Midlands. "Merwede" was built by a small team of top craftsman working for the Replica Luxe Motor Company. Because of her size she could not be built at our Braunston yard so she was built in a farm barn nearby, and was then transported by road to Tilbury for launching.

"Merwede" is now cruising in continental Europe, making good use of her comprehensive air conditioning system, her car crane, 360 degree vector thruster and other luxury equipment.

Our latest major project is the conversion of a 1936 28 metre Belgian Luxe Motor for a well known personality. Anglo European Marine carried out the preliminary viability inspection in Gent, Belgium followed by a full out-of-water survey in Terneuzen, Holland. We then delivered the boat to our holding mooring in Belgium where we worked with an Associate to carry out an engine change, install a hydraulic bow thruster and undertake various other underwater works ready for a channel crossing to England. We then delivered the boat to the Upper Thames and are now overseeing a full 12 month conversion project, this contract having been awarded to the Replica Luxe Motor Company.

We are available to help design and oversee your own barge project. We can introduce you to top quality builders, or you can select your own. We work with several of the U.K.'s better builders of Replica Luxe Motors and our input based on boat building experience and extensive European cruising experience helps ensure that your boat looks right, is comprehensively built and conforms to all the necessary requirements.

Barge & Narrowboat Building Oversight

We can accept full or partial commissions to supervise the building of your new narrow boat or barge. This can include all or some of the following services (although we would normally always prefer to be involved at the outset and contract stages if not necessarily at all later stages) :

* Scrutiny of specifications and contracts. Advice on acceptable payment terms, specification details etc.

* Inspection of a sample previous boat from that builder to identify any areas where improvements or changes might be requested.

* Finalise specifications.

* Periodic inspections during building at key points (e.g. completion of steelwork, completion of engine installation).

* Final inspection and sea trials.

* Inspection of RCD documentation and markings.

The overall cost of the full service depends upon a number of factors but is usually a single figure percentage of total build price.
