What should I do before I survey?

Normal form in the UK when buying a boat is to first find the boat you like, then agree a price subject to survey, pay a 10% deposit and then organise a survey. There are however a few additional stages that may or may not be obligatory or at the least desirable or prudent depending on various factors such as the location and registration status of the boat.
